Date: February 16, 2005

Title: Grouper and Cero's Make My Day

During our last trip on board the “Magic Fingers” we started out the day by loading up the live wells with a huge net full of live Pilchards. We have been catching Cero Mackerel just north of the Whistle Buoy off Key Largo and on this trip we started fishing in the same area. With a bag of chum over the side, it didn’t take long to have the Ceros chummed up to the boat and going crazy. Every once and a while we tossed “freebies” overboard and had the Ceros skyrocketing on our baited pilchards, lures, and flies. We enjoyed a good two hours of non-stop action. Most of the Cero’s were small. However, we did put a few fish in the five pound range in the box.

We moved south and anchored over an old honey hole I haven’t fished in months. We chummed again with livies and frozen chum and caught large kings and five nice size (10 to 20 pound) black grouper. A friend was fishing alongside and also caught a large 40 pound wahoo. Anglers fishing to the north off Triumph Reef also caught muttons and had a good sailfish bite in the morning. We were fishing the days before the full moon which probably helped our outcome, but with our winter season fast approaching, anglers can expect days like these to occur on almost any trip.

And then there was this trip……..!

On Monday we fished an afternoon trip in hefty winds (twenty to twenty-five plus) with an occasional downpour, off Key Biscayne. Fishing was dismal to say the least. The rain put our kites in the water, however the conditions were awesome! A good north current, and a hard edge with deep blue water on one side and green water on the other all along the drop off in about 120 feet of water. I was proud of my crew to have weathered terrible conditions in hopes of cashing in on some hot offshore action. For some reason, the fish just weren’t there. The only fish we saw was a lonesome king crashing through our baits. A valiant effort but nothing to show for it. Its days like Monday when it’s tough to
