Title: Sailfish Action On The Rise

The week following Christmas was OK at best. Only a few sailfish, dolphin and kingfish were caught. This past week we found much of the same with no current to the north off Key Biscayne but good current south of Fowey light. The conditions looked awesome but the fish were not there or not cooperating. We did catch a nice 40 pound Wahoo on the kite and landed a sail each day but other than a few kingfish that was it. To the north off the “boil” off Government Cut there have been some mornings and afternoons when the kingfish bite has been second to none. Anglers have been using live pilchards and threadfins for bait and have had no trouble catching their limit of two kingfish per person. On yesterdays trip we saw an increase in the sailfish action, we managed to release three, and we lost another Wahoo at the boat and caught a half dozen bonito. Other captains found more sails off the Monument Buoy off Key Biscayne. Other captains reported catching African Pompano on the wrecks which is common during the full period in January.

(2).jpg I look for an increase in the sailfish action this week. Along with continued kingfish and an occasional dolphin eating your kite baits. The word is that patch fishing has been good for some anglers, and on a very windy day, it could be a good alternative if you have a weak stomach. For me, I’ll take the wind. The sailfish bite better when it’s a little windy.
