Title: Blackfin Tuna Arrive

Anglers are anxiously awaiting the beginning of our dolphin season. They have been showing up one day and they’re gone for the next four. While typically, you can find dolphin further offshore, anglers have been making long runs to the dolphin grounds and have been coming up empty handed. This week most of the dolphin that were found, were in closer along the 100 fathom line. In fact, during one trip this week, I found plenty of dolphin along the edge of the gulf stream while kite fishing for sailfish.

And let’s not be in a rush to get rid of our winter fishing. There are still plenty of sailfish to be caught in the same areas we find them during the winter time. Captains kite fishing along the edge are still catching three to four sails per day. Now, along with the sails, there have been dolphin, large kingfish, and finally…..the big blackfin tuna have showed up. In the area of Government Cut, anglers have been catching kingfish from six to thirty pounds using live bait. Action has been best in the morning hours. I thought they would never show up, blackfin tuna are hitting the live baits fished from the kites. We caught two this past week, one twenty five pounds and the other about twenty. You may find a few bonito mixed in with the blackfins . While your cussing catching another bonito, you could be surprised to find out it’s a tuna.
