Fishing Report

Date: December 20, 2002

Title: Sailfish Return with Dolphin

After a week of very slow fishing week, yesterday (December 20), we had a terrific day of fishing. Just when you think you know a lot about fishing, you realize you don’t know anything. Conditions on this day were not the best, overcast, rainy, coming off a full moon, southwest winds, all conditions that usually don’t make for a great day of fishing. Well they proved me wrong. We ended up with three sails, dolphin, kingfish, tuna and muttons, all were caught while kite fishing. There was a good current to the south off Triumph Reef , while a few captains to the north reported no current off Key Biscayne and the water there was also dirty. We had good winds all day and the fish responded to it. Sailfishing has been very slow, but usually this time of the year it is terrific. This may be the first, of a lot of fish to the north of us, starting to move into our area. This Christmas week could see some excellent offshore game fishing.

Catching bait has been relatively easy, however I did notice a slowdown in the catching of Threadfins around the markers offshore. For those of you that like to mackerel fish, you might want to try fishing around the area of Bug Light for Spanish mackerel. While fishing for threadfins there, we lost about six Sabiki Rigs to mackerel that were in our chum line. I’m sure a few casts with a yellow ny lure would have received an instant hit, but we were too busy catching bait. Patch fishing has been good on the patches off Ocean Reef when there has been a good current. “keep your tip up and reel!” have a Merry Christmas!
