Title: Sailfish, Dolphin fall run begins
Anglers that missed the spring run of dolphin this year may just want to get out and give the fall run a try. This past week fisherman enjoyed terrific dolphin fishing from 1000feet of water all the way in to the reef. We fished this week and at one point left a school of dolphin with fish in it that were ten pounds and better. We were trying to sailfish using kites along the edge and the dolphin were becoming a pain in the ass. Don’t get me wrong. I love catching dolphin just as much as the next person, but we already had a fish box full and we wanted a sailfish. The fish have been under floating debris offshore, but look for them under frigate birds and petrals in closer.
And that’s another story. What’s with the sailfish? Don’t they know it’s September. Last week anglers were finding them under large schools of sardines in about 1000 feet of water. In fact, one captain caught 14 and another caught 18 in one day! Now, this week, anglers found the sailfish along the edge of the reef in 160 feet of water. The current has been strong to the north with nice clean water and all this week winds have been cooperating, blowing steadily out of the east at about 15 knots. Anglers fishing them with kites are having all the action. Other action while kite fishing included a few wahoo and bonita.
