Fishing Report

Date: August 8, 2002

Title: Bonita, Bonita, and More Bonita.

If you just want a pull on the end of your line, then there are plenty of bonita cruising the edge of the reef to make you happy. During a recent trip off Miami, we had a blast catching bonita on 4 pound test line and fly rods. We first chummed with live pilchards and then fished a few liveies off the side and within minutes we had all kinds of action around the boat. Once the bonita came within casting range, we tossed our flies in the action and had almost instant hook-ups.

There are still a few dolphin offshore, but they are not a sure thing. One boat may find a school while the other boats will come up empty handed. The few fish that have been found have been from 350 feet to 1000 feet of water.

Night time fishing for swordfish has been good. Anglers are finding fish from just 30 pounds up to 200 pounds. Live bait such as blue runners, tinker mackerel, and live goggle eye have been producing most of the action. A few fish have been caught on dead squid.

The up coming full moon should have the Cubera snapper schooling on the deeper wrecks. Live lobster is the bait of choice. The area off North Key Largo will give up most of the fish.
